“Spring” is in the Air — and on the Wall!

Monday, April 2nd, 2012

We received 17 amazing 12″ x 12″ quiltlets celebrating “Spring” by the March 31st deadline. Please stop by New Pieces and vote for your favorite between now and 6:00pm on April 5th if you can. The piece with the most votes will win a home made ribbon and a $10 New Pieces gift certificate.

We picked a complicated theme fabric for March, but evidence shows it didn’t slow our quilters down very much.  Each piece has a story, and some of those stories are available on the Facebook page  New Pieces 12 x 12″ x 12″ Challenge . The April Challenge has just begun, and the challenge “kit” (theme word & fat 1/8 of the theme fabric) are available at New Pieces. We welcome you to come play with us — just for the fun of it!

Kaleidoscope with Sue Wells: Simple and Stunning!

Saturday, January 21st, 2012

I just spent half an hour looking at the class sample for Sue Well’s “Kaleidoscope” class. Wow!

My photos can’t do justice to this luscious and lively quilt. The quilt has 30 blocks, each with a unique pattern, and all cut from ONE stunning Asian print fabric. The same fabric  becomes the quilt’s border.

The method is similar to, but simpler and more controlled than, a “One-Block Wonder”. Your fabric choice will strongly effect your result.

Sue says her favorite part of making this quilt is the sense of excitement and wonder  she gets opening each and every block — when each one turns out to be different, and lovely.

The Kaleidoscope class will be held on Tuesday February 28 and March 13, from 2-4:00pm. A few spaces remain as of today.

Alethea Ballard has a thing about chairs, and color and whimsy.

She also has a class at New Pieces next month, November 5th from 10-4.

Working from Alethea’s “book” (a Pattern Pack featuring multiple chair-related projects) and with her assistance, you will learn to create with large scale fabrics and your own developing sense of the whimsical. Alethea’s workshop is not likely to be repeated soon, and is suitable for all levels so please consider making time for it this November 5th.

DISAPPEARING NINE-PATCH

with Cindi Cossen

May 21st, 10:00am – 2:00pm

Disappearing Nine-Patch is one of those patterns that seems more complex than it really is — the piecing is doable by quilters at all levels. With Cindi’s help you’ll make color and design decisions that can range from whimsical to sophisticated. (This could be the perfect place for that focus fabric you’ve been saving…)

Cindi teaches you what you need to know to complete your quilt top at home, unless you already finished it in class…

This class carries both new icons from the New Pieces class schedule.

That means it’s an adventure — but with an experienced tour guide!

Begin With a 9-Patch; Make a Stunning Quilt!

Detail of Becky’s Nine-Patch Quilt

2 Mondays, May 9 and 23

6:15 pm – 9:15 pm      All Levels

Begin With the 9-Patch is perfect for quilters of all experience levels who want to master a basic pieced quilt, while concentrating on color and pattern scale to make a quilt that really ‘sings’.
Teacher Becky Keck says, “The 9-patch is one of the most basic and easiest blocks to make. It either blends with the focus fabric or contrasts with it and moves your eye across the quilt.”
Beginners will learn use of the rotary cutter, basic piecing rules,  strip-piecing, block construction  and bordering. This class is one of the first marked with the “Beginner Friendly” icon, but it will still challenge anyone who takes it.
