This is the latest quilt from our friend Ed LeClair. Breathtaking!

Kathy’s quilting accents Ed’s brilliant color selection. The back is as wonderful as the front. Thanks, Ed, for sharing your quilt with us – and we can’t wait to see what’s next.

Her First Quilt, and it is Lovely

Sunday, July 17th, 2011

Leann Gustafson just picked up her first quilt from Quilt Service at New Pieces. It is a beauty; subtle, simple and truly lovely. We are all very impressed. Leann says there are many quilters in her family.  She’s headed for a family reunion soon and hopes to share her quilt with them.

It sounds like the family has one more quilter than they used to. Congratulations Leann, and thank you for sharing your quilt and story with us!

Nancy Wohl – Mystery Quilter!

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

Nancy Wohl first came to our store while it was still on Solano Avenue and her daughter was first a student at U.C. Berkeley. After that visit Nancy was hooked on the New Pieces way of color and quiltmaking.

Nancy is an English teacher at a girl’s Catholic school in New Orleans. She was inspired to make quilts for each senior in her homeroom, each year. Although the system has now changed, until this year her homeroom girls stayed with her for the whole 4 years of high school.  Nancy got to know each girl over those years, and she made quilts to suit them individually.

Imagine being sent off into the world with a quilt, a THOUGHTFUL quilt, made just for YOU, by your homeroom teacher.

So, you have a WONDERFULLY funny teacher, Nancy, a crazy project (make the girls quilts) and a friendship with New Pieces…we’ve  done whatever it takes to get those quilts back to Nancy before graduation… what an amazing experience.

Many folks who came to see Nancy yesterday were rolling in the aisle, telling her she has to do stand up comedy.

We are so lucky to know you Nancy… Even though your own daughter has now graduated from U.C. Berkeley (Go Bears!), we hope you will come back and see us often. You’re part of our community.

Thanks for being SO GREAT.
We ALL VOTE YOU TEACHER OF THE DECADE…

MYSTERY QUILTER COMES TO TOWN! 10:30-11:30AM, May 17th.

Tuesday, May 10th, 2011

On Tuesday, May 17th (10:30-11:30am) New Pieces welcomes our third MYSTERY QUILTER to share her amazing (and we believe unique) quilter’s quest with all comers. This month’s guest is well known to the Staff at New Pieces, but will be coming from a great distance to the Bay Area. We have had to move the time for this talk to 10:30AM, as Her Royal Mysteriousness will be attending a graduation at a nearby University, in the afternoon.

As always, the Mystery Quilter talk is free, and starts promptly on the half-hour. There’s plenty of room, but seating is first-come, first-served. You may want to bring your mid-morning coffee with you, or plan to meet a friend for lunch after the talk.

Join us, please, for a talk that may inspire you to think about  your own quilting in a different way, and will certainly leave you feeling warm and fuzzy like a quilter should.

A Day at the Store…

Saturday, April 30th, 2011

When I came to work on Thursday, Mary Mix’s purple 9-patch quilt was on a table being carefully checked for loose threads.

It is an almost mesmerizing quilt. The more we looked, the more different, and interesting fabric choices we found.

The quilting pattern she selected complements the pattern well, too. It’s “swoopy” not square, and I think she chose a variegated thread as well.  Thanks Mary, for letting us share your quilt!

QUILTS FOR JAPAN

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

This is the message that goes with the quilt you donate to Quilts4Japan.org. The character is “heart”, and there is a message of good will and support. It can’t get much simpler than that.

Please visit Quilts4Japan.org for information on how to help give warmth and hope to survivors of the recent disasters in Japan.

Quilts4Japan is a Berkeley based organization. Gail Shea is coordinating quilt donations, and Eve Kusner is handling transportation  and distribution. If you drop your donation off at New Pieces, we will be sure to take a picture for the Flickr.com group!

Hamlin Quilt

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

We were contacted in January of this year to make a quilt for the Hamlin School. We have made fund raising quilts with Hamlin in the past, but this one is unique.

The plan was to put profiles of all the kindergartners on the quilt, along with their names. These girls are the Class of 2019, Hamlin School.

The process involved printing nearly life-size profile photos of the girls on a photocopier, cutting the profiles from lovely sherbet colored batik fabrics and fusing the profiles, and the girls’ signatures, to the background. . Once fused, the pieces were stitched for permanence and the top was quilted by New Pieces quilt service. The topmost picture shows the quilt top before quilting.

What an amazing keepsake for this year, and for years to come!

Jim’s “Cambria Seven” Quilt

Thursday, February 24th, 2011

Jim came in this morning. I’m so glad I was there to see him and his quilt. Months ago he came in with pictures of the people who matter most to him – and to whom he matters most – and an idea for a quilt. He had promised to bring the quilt in to show us when it was finished. He also brought photos of earlier work he’d also promised to show us. Truly a man of his word – in the little ways that make such a difference in every day life.

Jim’s has had health issues and Ellie Irvin helped him with the quilt, but the concept and the friends are his. From left to right in the center: Jane, Ron, Victor, Shannon and Carl, with Jim and his lovely Roxanne at top and bottom. Job well done. Thank you for sharing. Long live “The Cambria Seven”, and thank you!   – Heather
