BASIC HAND PIECING

 In this class, we will start with a simple 4 patch block and learn how to properly rotary cut and mark your pieces.  You will learn how to do a hand piecing running stitch and how to pin your pieces together to make hand piecing accurate and relaxing. After sewing the block together, we will go over the proper way to press your piecework and square up your blocks without cutting off your points.

April 25th, (sign up separately), we will then advance to a churn dash block and learn how to fast piece half square triangles, the hand piecing way, and how to keep bias edges under control. We will also learn how to cut blocks from templates and hand piece curves using a propeller block pattern.  You will end up with accurately pieced and squared blocks to make a table runner or start a lap sized quilt. 

Supply List

1. 4 fat quarters of fabric (2 light colored, 2 dark colored) prewashed and ironed if possible

2. Hand quilting thread such as Gutermann or YLI. This is strong thread that is specially made for hand piece work and is available at New Pieces. 

3.  Hand piecing needles are called "Sharps".  Invest in a good quality needle such as John James or Richard Hemmings, which is available at New Pieces. 

4. Rotary cutter and mat.

5. Quilter's ruler, 12.5" square with a 45 degree marking line at the corner. (Creative Grids)

6. Applique pins, short sized. Clover makes a good one with a white head that is easy to use.  These are important.

7. T shaped pins for blocking and a water mister to steam blocks

8. Regular No. 2 pencil and sharpener for marking sewing lines

9. Scissors for cutting fabric and thread, pincushion, and notebook and pen for note takers. 

Optional Supplies:  Thimble, needle threader, Thread conditioner such as Thread Magic and a sandpaper board to keep fabric from shifting as you mark your stitching lines.
