Seeing Dots and Spots

Saturday, February 18th, 2012

Sometimes customers come to New Pieces looking for dots…

Polka dots, and spots, and the usual “I’ll know it when I see it”…

Sometimes customers don’t tell staff what they’re looking for….

but, maybe they find something they love.  As they get ready to leave…

they discover a few bolts of dots and spots they missed before…

Come in soon — we promise to have at least a few bolts of dotty fabric for you…

(Psssssst — They’re under the counter by the cash register!)

Pull Up a Dream Chair and Get Cozy!

Thursday, October 6th, 2011

Alethea Ballard has a thing about chairs, and color and whimsy.

Dream Chair Quilt by Alethea Ballard

She also has a class at New Pieces next month, November 5th from 10-4.

Dream Chair Quilt by Alethea Ballard

Working from Alethea’s “book” (a Pattern Pack featuring multiple chair-related projects) and with her assistance, you will learn to create with large scale fabrics and your own developing sense of the whimsical. Alethea’s workshop is not likely to be repeated soon, and is suitable for all levels so please consider making time for it this November 5th.

Why Yes, We Do Have Organic Cottons….

15 bolts of solid “sheeting” weight fabrics in vivid colors

Plus an adorable selection of “Robot” themed prints, made in the same vivid, low-impact dyes. All these organics are standard 44″ width, and yes they cost a little bit more than the equivalent. Come See!

More From Marcia Derse

Wednesday, September 21st, 2011

New this week at New Pieces — more luscious prints from Marcia Derse which work with and expand the selection we already have from earlier this year. Marcia Derse fabrics are commercially printed from her hand painted textiles.

Also from Marcia Derse,

We also have received several bolts of her stunning, saturated, solid-like colors that work brilliantly with her prints and with those from the Kaffe Fassett line…. and almost any saturated colors or batiks you have in your stash, or were resisting adding to it…

At this rate Derse could become an adjective to describe intense, slightly edgy, modern quilting fabrics.

More Fabric!

Wednesday, August 10th, 2011

We are swimming in amazing new fabric again this week, and invite you to come stick your toes in if you get the chance. These are from a group of stunning oversize print fabrics guaranteed to challenge even intrepid sewers/sewists. Come see!

New “Solids” at New Pieces!

Friday, July 15th, 2011

Among the bolts of new fabrics that arrived in the Store this week were sets of bolts that cheerfully strain the concept of “solid” color. While a picture is worth a thousand words — no picture can really do adequate service to these fabrics. We encourage you to look for them the next time you are in the Store. They may not be with us long.

There are eight bolts of this clear gem-toned cloth, each with the same, subtle, printed “texture” that lets them perform as slightly more than solid.

There are also 11 new bolts of an amazing fabric called “Lumiere Sateen”.  Cotton sateen ombres that glow. We’re speechless.

If you have a project in the planning stage for which you needed “Solids +”, these may be the fabrics for which you were waiting.

The pictures can at least give you an idea…

Circles and Squares

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011

In July and early August you have the opportunity to take two wonderful classes over three consecutive Saturdays:  Check out Cindi Cossen’s Jewel Squares (Quik Quilt) on Saturday July 30th, and Rebecca Rohrkaste’s Circles Another Way on July 23rd and August 6.

Jewel Squares with Cindi Cossen.  Saturday July 30

Cindi will show you how to make a quilt that almost sparkles, using many different fabrics and only one rectangular pattern piece.   Quick cutting and sewing techniques will get your quilt off to a fast start.

Join Cindi for this class that is easy enough for beginners and fun for all levels of quilter.

Circles Another Way, with Rebecca Rohrkaste

July 23 and August 6

Rebecca will show you free-hand cutting and sewing techniques (no templates, no pins!) that make stunning quarter-circle blocks for your next improvisational quilt.

There will be time to try variations, work on color choices with Rebecca, and begin a quilt top using your new skills.

Undersea Spectacular

Our friend Nancy Brown will be teaching her amazing Undersea Class beginning June 12, on five Sunday afternoons, once a month for five months. Looking at the pictures, there’s really not much more that needs to be said. Once you master the techniques, you can do more than you ever dreamed, and this might be your first step.

And Now – For Something Completely Different!

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011

with Pat Dicker — May 15th at Noon

These “Sistas” are just plain fun. Each one is 14″ tall, with limbs you can position and has an exuberant personality that can’t be measured. Dancing Sistas prove the old adage that one can never be too thin, or too richly colored and textured. Pat is a great teacher, and  a lot of fun, even without her Sistas.

As of May 3rd there are spaces for two or three more students in this workshop. Maybe its time you made yourself a “doppelganger” or totem figure — Sistas are also flat enough to mail to a love one.
