Postpartum Depression (PPD) – Working at New Pieces

Recently we had an interesting thing happen at New Pieces.  A customer came in and mentioned that she was going back East to help a family member who was suffering from Postpartum Depression.  She just happened to be talking with Becky at the time.  Postpartum Depression (PPD) is an illness that is close to Becky’s heart.

Here is Becky’s  story:

I got a phone call the day after Christmas 20 some years ago.  My sister, who had four kids, (the youngest was 5 months old) had taken her life.  None of the family even had an idea that she was having serious problems with postpartum depression.  Unfortunately we found out too late to help her and her kids.  I also have a sister who is a nurse and she has dedicated her career to helping women with this problem find support.  Two years ago, with the help of New Pieces staff, I was able to make a quilt dedicated to those women and family members who have died due to PPD.  The quilt was given to an organization called Postpartum Support International.  My sister works extensively with the group and I have also had experience with it.  It is an excellent organization and is a definite resource for any woman or family that suspects PPD.  They have a great website  – just google “Postpartum Support International” and they come up. http://postpartum.net/

My request to anyone who knows of someone who may be suffering from Postpartum Depression is that you check out this organization or call me and I will see what I can do to help.  If I can save  just one woman and family from the tragedy that our  family has gone through,  I would be pleased.  Consider me a resource for this illness, please. Love, Becky
