No previous dyeing experience is necessary. 
Wear old clothes and shoes so you won’t mind if dye gets on them.

Learn how to construct a traditional mariner’s compass design, selected according to students skill level using freezer paper template or foundation methods. Begin with a short lesson on the drafting principals behind radiating stars and includes the most common variations. The project is a 15” diameter star (pattern provided) and students are encouraged to choose the variation suited to their skill level. Discussion of color and fabric choices. Most students are able to complete at least one-quarter of the design in class (and many complete the whole star) which will give them the basic information about this precision sewing technique of stitching along the edge of perforated freezer paper foundations or templates. Make a wonderful fantasy portrait quilt! Start with a very simple drawing of a face (like kindergarten) on an 8” square of paper. This will be repeated 16 times using a basic machine appliqué technique. We will be using fusible interfacing to anchor the pieces. It will be similar to putting a jig-saw puzzle together 16 times! (But we will be using fabric!) Then we will use the satin stitch on the sewing machine for the appliqué. You can finish your quilt with buttons for the eyes, etc. This will be a workshop dealing with a specific quilt making technique which can be followed like a recipe. You will have a completed quilt top by the end of the workshop.

RAINFOREST APPLIQUE

Five Sundays – Aug. 29, Sept. 12, Oct. 10, and Nov. 14, Dec 12     1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Come learn all about hand appliqué, layering appliqué pieces and choosing fabric while working on a    17 x 22” wallhanging featuring a scene of animals from the rainforest of Costa Rica. We will work on one (or two) animals a month for five months and these include a resplendent quetzal (bird), margay (wild cat), spider monkey, snake and poison dart frog. I will also show you how to make a pattern of your favorite animal from a photograph so you can individualize your rainforest (for instance you would be able to replace the snake with a hummingbird).

AMAZING ASIAN BLOCK OF THE MONTH CLUB

Each month we will demonstrate the construction of a new pattern for you to make using the book “Japanese Quilt Blocks” as our inspiration.  At the end of the year, participants will have twelve blocks with which to 
create their own special quilts with fabrics and colors of their own choice.

2010  Dates:  Nov 20, December - No Meeting Happy Holidays

$25 first time, $5 thereafter or FREE with completed block.

SATURDAY SAMPLER 2010 will feature a series of 9 inch blocks.  Each month will include three ways of making the block .  Make your block in two of the alternates each month and you will have 20 blocks for your quilt at the end of the year!  There will be monthly demonstrations of the quilt blocks, with tips for block construction, notions and setting ideas.  Attend the 15-20 minute demo each month and present the previous month's block to receive the new month's instructions and fabric for free.
